Interacting with a social media account requires more than just a like or a comment in the eyes of the algorithms. One of the first fun facts I learned about commenting is that your comment has to be at least three words for the algorithm to acknowledge that a comment has been made. Prior to this knowledge I would comment on friend’s posts with single words like ‘cute’ or ‘love’. While these comments may boost someone’s spirits they will not be boosting social media engagement. The first hour after you post on social media (instagram and Facebook) only 20% of your followers will actually see your post on their feed. After the first hour the algorithm will evaluate the impressions your post has made and determine how many of your followers will see it in the hours and days to follow. Keep this in mind the next tome you go to reply to a comment on your own post. Commenting “Thank you” is like not commenting at all.
